Jewish Cemetery

Jewish Cemetery

Quatzenheim was the seat of the rabbinate from 1880 to 1910. The cemetery dates from 1793, at that time the first tombs were the same, whether rich or poor. There are more than a hundred tombs with inscriptions in Hebrew. The cemetery, surrounded by a sandstone enclosure wall, is divided into four sectors. Sector 1, to the South-west, contains about a hundred arched stelae from the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century. In sector 2, to the North-West, there are about 180 neo-classical stelae dating from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Sector 3, to the North-East, contains about 50 stelae from the beginning of the 20th century (after 1930), followed by contemporary granite stelae. The last sector, to the South-East, is not occupied. At its western end is a monument to the deportation dead. Although Jews have been recorded in other villages in the vicinity, Quatzenheim is the only commune in the canton to have a Jewish cemetery.
