Chapelle Saint Laurent de Gougenheim

Chapelle Saint Laurent de Gougenheim

The construction of the present St Laurent Chapel dates from 1524, it was restored and/or modified in 1836 and 1876. During this restoration, the entrance door, which was on the south side, was placed on the west side. On this occasion a skeleton was found in a fairly good state of preservation. It is thought that there may have been a cemetery. Inside 2/3 of the length of the cemetery, foundations were discovered (perhaps from the chapel of 1136?) suggesting that the chapel had been enlarged. The bell of the chapel was bought in 1859.
The pilgrims - who invoked St. Lawrence to heal skin diseases such as abscesses and eczema - cleaned the chapel with a broom which they then hung on the chapel wall as an offering for their healing. Chapel closed from November to Easter.
