Fête de la musique: a long-standing tradition celebrated in Le Beau Jardin
Every year on 21 June, France vibrates to the sound of music.
In the streets, cafés, parks and churches, amateurs and professionals share their passion with the public. But where does this emblematic festival come from? And how is it celebrated in the Kochersberg and the Pays de la Zorn? We tell you all about it.
An idea born in the 1980s
The Fête de la Musique, as we know it today, was launched in 1982 on the initiative of Jack Lang, then Minister of Culture. The idea was simple but innovative: to bring music to the streets, by allowing all musicians – amateur and professional alike – to perform freely in the public space, with no restrictions on style.
The date of 21 June was not chosen at random: it corresponds to the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and symbolises a festive and convivial moment. The festival soon became a huge success in France, and was soon exported internationally. Today, more than 120 countries take part in this not-to-be-missed event.
