Enjoy the Summer in the Cooler Air: Our Ideas for Outings in the Kochersberg and the Pays de la Zorn
When the temperature soars, there’s no need to miss out on summer adventures. In the Kochersberg and the Pays de la Zorn, the early hours of the day and the long August evenings reveal a different side to the region. Morning walks, sightseeing out of the sun, swimming, open-air cafés and village festivals: here are our ideas for making the most of summer in Alsace whilst seeking a bit of relief from the heat.
As August begins, temperatures are approaching 35 °C around Strasbourg and remain high into the early evening. This weather calls for a rethink of your holiday or day-out plans, avoiding the hottest hours in favour of the morning and late afternoon.
What if this change of plan became an opportunity to discover Le Beau Jardin in a different light? At dawn, the countryside comes to life in a soft glow. Come evening, the villages come alive once more with terraces, concerts and summer festivals.
Go for a walk in the early hours of the morning
In summer, the Kochersberg and the Pays de la Zorn belong to the early risers. Before the sun gets too high in the sky, the country lanes invite you to go for a walk amongst the fields, orchards and hop fields.
In Wingersheim-les-Quatre-Bans, the Hop Trail offers a glimpse into the world of this plant, which is emblematic of Alsace. In August, the tall hop vines adorn the landscape with their lush foliage. In the morning, the temperatures are more pleasant and the light highlights the contours of the Pays de la Zorn.
Families can also explore the villages through the fun walks on offer in Hochfelden, Hohatzenheim, Mittelhausen, Truchtersheim and Wilwisheim. Armed with a route guide, young and old alike can follow a trail punctuated by puzzles about local history, heritage and traditions. In Truchtersheim, the walk takes around two hours and can be done at your own pace all year round. During hot weather, it’s best to set off early in the morning.
Another option is to hop on a bike to cycle between the villages before the heat sets in. The area’s narrow roads then reveal their most beautiful views, with church spires, Alsatian farmhouses and cultivated hills. Plan a manageable route, take a well-filled water bottle and allow for several breaks in the shade.
Take a peaceful break in Hohatzenheim
Overlooking the Pays de la Zorn, the Church of Notre-Dame in Hohatzenheim makes for a particularly pleasant stop on a summer’s morning. This pilgrimage site, the oldest parts of which date back to the 12th century, has been listed as a historic monument since 1898.
After exploring the church at your leisure, take some time to stroll through the garden surrounding it. The site offers a peaceful atmosphere and a lovely vantage point from which to admire the surrounding countryside. Hohatzenheim also remains closely associated with the traditional pilgrimage on 15 August, one of the summer’s highlights in the Pays de la Zorn.

Just a short walk away, a fun trail allows you to continue exploring the village with your family. Here too, it’s best to set off early in the day and postpone the walk until the heat becomes too intense.
During the hottest part of the day, pop into the museums
When the sun is at its highest, it’s time to explore the cultural attractions in the shade.
In Truchtersheim, the Maison du Kochersberg tells the story of the region through its history, traditions and rural heritage. Until early 2027, the exhibition ‘From Hops to the Spirit of Beer’ traces the role of ‘green gold’ and the brewing tradition in Alsace. This is a particularly seasonal visit, as the hop fields are coming to maturity in the surrounding countryside. The museum is open every day during the summer months, with varying opening hours.
In Hochfelden, the Musée Mémoire & Paix invites visitors to explore contemporary history through collections, documents and artefacts linked to past conflicts. It is open to visitors on Wednesdays and Sundays, from May to October.
These visits offer a chance to slow down, gain a better understanding of the identity of the Kochersberg and the Pays de la Zorn, and pass the time pleasantly until the temperatures start to drop again.
Treat yourself to a truly refreshing break in Hochfelden
When the heat becomes too much to bear, head to the Atoo-o aquatic centre in Hochfelden. With its 25-metre competition pool, leisure pool, paddling pool and water slide, it’s a popular day-out destination for families and swimmers alike.
The centre also features a retractable roof and a grassy area. It’s the perfect place to alternate between swimming, relaxing and playing in the water in the heart of the Pays de la Zorn. Before you go, however, do remember to check the opening times for that day, as these may vary during school holidays.
Wait until the evening to soak up the atmosphere of the open-air cafés
From 6 pm onwards, the atmosphere in the villages changes. The shadows grow longer, the terraces come to life and culinary delights take over from outdoor activities.
In Gimbrett, the Domaine Bohr is hosting its final open-air dance on 13 August 2026. Music, light refreshments and a festive atmosphere are on the programme from 6 pm. The evening will be enlivened by a brass band and DJs.
In Hochfelden, the Villa Meteor’s Biergarten welcomes visitors on Thursdays and Fridays, from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm, until 4 September. In the Villa’s garden, everyone can enjoy a convivial evening centred on the local brewing heritage, with musical entertainment on certain evenings and light refreshments on selected dates. Entry is free, subject to availability.
These events also offer a pleasant way to discover the region’s produce and local expertise as the heat finally begins to ease. Alcoholic drinks should, of course, be consumed in moderation.
Making the evenings last longer at village festivals
August is also the month of local festivals and open-air events.
On 23 August, the Messti de Truchtersheim will bring the village streets to life until 11 pm. Following the flea market, the entertainment and the traditional parade of floats scheduled for 5 pm, the festivities will continue at the open farms with live music, tarte flambée and pizzas.
On 29 August, the pop-up bar in Durningen will open its doors from 6 pm. This evening, organised by the rural community centre, will feature cocktails, light refreshments and a themed atmosphere.
Before you set off, check the calendar of events at the Le Beau Jardin Tourist Office: new activities, tours and evening events may be added to the programme as the month progresses.
Top tips for a great summer day out
Even in the morning or evening, it can still be quite hot. By taking a few precautions, you can enjoy your outing without any worries: take plenty of water with you, drink regularly without waiting until you feel thirsty, wear a hat and light clothing, choose a gentle activity, and make sure to take breaks in a cool place.
Santé publique France recommends, in particular, staying in the cool until the end of the day during heatwaves, limiting physical exertion and avoiding alcohol, which contributes to dehydration. Special care is needed for young children, the elderly and vulnerable people.
If a thunderstorm is forecast, you should also consider postponing walks in the countryside and check the forecast and Météo-France’s weather alert map before setting off.
Experience summer at a different pace in Le Beau Jardin
Enjoying the summer in the Kochersberg and the Pays de la Zorn also means learning to slow down. A walk at dawn, a few hours in a museum, a swim or an evening under the fairy lights of an open-air café are all it takes to make for a lovely day.
When the temperature rises, Le Beau Jardin comes into its own at the times of day when the light is at its softest: early in the morning, as the villages wake up, and in the evening, when the locals gather. It’s another way to savour Alsace in summer, just a few kilometres from Strasbourg.
